NSR Administration published Official long-term ice forecasts for the Arctic seas on the second half of navigation (September-October), 2013

According to Roshydromet bulletin Easy ice conditions expected mostly at all parts of NSR water area, besides Northeast part of the Kara Sea, where Moderate ice conditions expected. Long-term forecast will be followed by 3-days updates forecasts. Full version is available at the NSR Administration webpage www.nsra.ru

The official long-term ice forecast and subsequent updates are an essential aspect for the organization of navigation on the NSR. The fact is that according to the Rules of Navigation, the permission for a vessel to sail through various sub-areas of the NSR and the need for icebreaker support is determined on the basis of the ice conditions, the season of navigation and the vessel’s ice-class.

Below is one of the tables from the Annex 2 to the Rules of Navigation (for vessels with class Ice1 - Ice3 during navigation in the period July to 15th November) on the criteria for the admission of ships in accordance with their ice reinforcement class.

«IN» –independent navigation; «IS» –with icebreaker support;
«S» – severe, «M» – moderate, «L» – easy ice conditions according to the Rosgidromet official information;
«+» – navigation is allowed; «–» – navigation is not allowed.
