Chukotka port of Pevek to close the navigation

The last caravan of vessels is preparing to leave the Arctic port of Pevek in Chukotka. During the extended navigation the port handled 293 000 tons of cargo delivered via the Northern Sea Route. The cargo, a significant part of which were equipment and construction materials for resource extraction projects, was delivered to Pevek, both from the west and from the east.

At the present moment two dry cargo vessels from Arkhangelsk are still in the port of Pevek: Polar King (part of the Eco Shipping fleet) and Inzhener Trubin (owned by the Northern Shipping Company). The motor vessels will be escorted through the ice along the transport corridor of the Northern Sea Route to Arkhangelsk by the diesel-electric icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn and the nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika. The home port for the both icebreakers is Murmansk. Such voyage in the deepest winter, in February, from Pevek westwards is the first in the history of the port of Pevek.

The navigation season in Pevek will be closed after the caravan leaves the port.

This year navigation in the Arctic has proven difficult due to a major logistical crisis and early ice formation two weeks ahead of the usual date.
