NSR Shipping Traffic – Activities in January-June 2020
The first half of 2020 showed a high shipping activity at the winter navigation season. There is an increase in the number of both voyages and vessels on the NSR compared to previous years. In total, in the first 6 months of 2020, 71 ships made 935 voyages. The most active month was April, and the least activity was observed in June. It should be noted that such a distribution of traffic by months can be named typical for the last 3 years (see the graph on the map).
The bulk of the transportation was made by tankers carrying oil products from the Arctic Gate terminal (228 voyages) and tankers exporting LNG from Sabetta (257 voyages). A considerable share belongs to the category “other” (220 passages), these include transportations of general cargoes to Sabetta, to the Utrennee (Salmanovskoe) field, to Dudinka; passages and changes of the work areas of diesel icebreakers, tugs, SAR vessels, as well as the movement of two oil tankers to the ports / port points of the Ob Bay.

Most of the voyages were made by vessels of ice class Arc 7 – 561 voyages (5 container ships of Norilsk Nickel, 15 LNG tankers of the Yamal LNG project, 10 tankers, including 2 tankers transporting gas condensate from the port of Sabetta).
There is also a slight increase in eastbound transportations at the end of the winter period. In 2020, there were 5 such voyages, in 2019 – one, and in 2018 – 2. In all cases, these were LNG transportations.
