Nuclear icebreaker Arktika completes its first vessel escort operation to the port of Pevek
The icebreaker has shown compliance with the designed icebreaking capability
As reported by Atomflot on 01 January 2022, the lead multi-purpose nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika (operated by Rosatom’s Atomflot) has completed its farthest voyage to the east – to the port of Pevek (Chukotka Autonomous Okrug).
Assisted by the diesel-electric icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn, Arktika has completed the operation to escort MV Yuriy Arshenevsky and MV Inzhener Trubin. As informed by Atomflot, the vessels have delivered general cargo to Chukotka for the companies implementing investment projects in the region. “This is the first voyage of the lead multi-purpose nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika to the port of Pevek. The icebreaker has shown compliance with the designed icebreaking capability. This escort operation is a good experience in operating a multi-purpose nuclear-powered icebreaker. The icebreaker crew learned the vessel’s capabilities in practice. Atomflot’s Marine Operations Headquarters will review the results for further planning of activities”, – Mustafa Kashka, Atomflot’s General Director, commented.
On 18 December 2021 at the western ice edge of the Kara Sea the icebreaker Arktika took the lead of the convoy of three vessels (Yuriy Arshenevsky, Polar King and Inzhener Trubin). The convoy was joined by the diesel-electric icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn. On 28 December near the Novaya Sibir island in the Eastern Siberian Sea MV Polar King left the convoy and was set adrift. “We did it to advance arrival of the vessels at the port of Pevek for quick start of unloading operations”, – Vladimir Aryutunyan, Head of the Marine Operations Headquarters and Deputy Director for Shipping at Atomflot, said.
The icebreaker Arktika took MV Yuriy Arshenevsky in tow, while the icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn took MV Inzhener Trubin in tow. Following landing of the two vessels, the icebreaker will continue escorting MV Polar King. The vessels unloading operation is to take up to 10 days, in the meantime Arktika will lead MV Polar King to Pevek.
